# Discord Emoji Guide — Custom Emoji, Stickers & Limits

How Discord emoji work: upload sizes, Nitro vs boost slots, animated emoji, naming, and where to grab exact pixel specs.

Use the generator on this page in your browser, then copy the result into Discord. No Discord login or bot token is required for the core tools.

## Custom emoji vs default emoji

Discord ships with standard Unicode emoji. Custom emoji are images your server uploads so members can type :shortcode: and react with server-specific art. Stickers are a separate larger asset type with their own size limits.

Anyone in a server can use that server’s custom emoji while chatting there. Nitro unlocks using custom emoji (and stickers) from other servers in places Discord allows.

## Upload size, file limits, and design tips

Design custom emoji at **128 × 128 px** and keep each file under **256 KB**. Prefer transparent PNGs for static emoji and short, simple GIFs for animated ones. Bold shapes beat tiny detail — Discord scales emoji down hard in chat.

Full tables live on our [Discord emoji size converter](https://discorder.tools/discord-emoji-size-converter/) — resize to 128×128 and compress under 256 KB before you upload.

| Asset | Practical target | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Custom emoji (static) | 128×128 PNG, ≤256 KB | Transparency recommended |
| Custom emoji (animated) | 128×128 GIF, ≤256 KB | Needs animated slots (boost) |
| Stickers (static art) | Larger canvas / higher KB cap | Separate from emoji uploads |
| Jumbo display | Emoji-only messages | Discord enlarges emoji when a message is mostly emoji |

## Nitro, boosts, and emoji slots

Server Boost level expands how many static and animated custom emoji a server can hold. Without enough boosts, animated uploads may be blocked even if your PNG uploads still work.

Nitro is about using emoji across servers and unlocking personal cosmetics — it is not the same as giving every server unlimited upload slots. If you started a trial you don’t want, use the cancel guide before it converts to a paid period.

## How to add custom emoji to a server

1. You need the Manage Expressions (or equivalent) permission — usually owner/admin.

2. Open Server Settings → Emoji (or Expressions), then upload your 128×128 file.

3. Give it a clear shortcode name (letters, numbers, underscores) so :name: autocomplete works.

4. Test in a channel on desktop and mobile. If Discord rejects the file, compress under 256 KB and retry.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What size should Discord custom emoji be?

128 × 128 pixels, under 256 KB. See the Discord emoji size converter for the full specs table and upload tool.

### Do I need Nitro to upload emoji?

No. Uploading requires server permissions and available emoji slots. Nitro helps you use custom emoji from other servers; server boosts expand slot counts including animated emoji.

### Why won’t my animated emoji upload?

Your server may lack animated emoji slots (boost level), or the GIF is over 256 KB. Compress the file or upgrade boost level, then retry.

### Can I use another server’s emoji in DMs?

With Nitro (where Discord allows it), yes for custom emoji you have access to. Without Nitro, custom emoji generally stay within the server that owns them.
